The Hockey World Cup in India

Key England defender Richard Mantell (1992-99;Edgarley and Day) suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle in helping his team to a third successive victory in the World Cup, and flew home to undergo surgery, as had his brother Simon (1994-2002; Edgarley and Day) before the tournament began.

Having reached the semis, the Mantell-less England team bowed out to Germany in a 4-1 defeat. Goalkeeper Nick Brothers (1994-01; Edgarley & Shapwick) was the other member of the ex-Millfield contingent in India.

England were denied a bronze medal by the Netherlands who defeated them 4-3, despite England leading 3-1 at one stage. Australia were crowned champions after beating Germany 2-1 in the final.
