JANUARY 2012: Mary given the Freedom of Wells
A campaign to award the Freedom of the City of Wells to 1964 Olympic Long Jump Champion OM Mary Rand (now MaryToomey-Reese) has been successful, thanks largely to the unstinting efforts of another OM athlete Tony Williams (1958-61; Day).
Tony has always held the view that this honour should have been conferred on Mary soon after she won the gold medal in Tokyo, but is now delighted that Mary will be able to receive the award in person in Britain's Olympic year.
