The latest from the Hockey World Cup

Key England defender Richard Mantell (1992-99;Edgarley and Day) suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle in helping his team to a third successive vistory in the World Cup in India, and is flying home to undergo surgery on Monday (8th March).

In a sometimes heated encounter, England defeated former champions Pakistan 5-2 to lead Pool B by 3 points going into their final group matches against hosts India and Olympic silver medallists Spain.

Richard's misfortune means that both he and his brother Simon (1994-2002; Edgarley and Day) have had to withdraw from the tournament through injury and only goalkeeper Nick Brothers (1994-01; Edgarley & Shapwick) remains from the ex-Millfield contingent in India.

Bad luck for another OM hockey player has fallen on Nick Page (Edgarley and Day 1994-2005) who suffered a badly broken finger playing for Premier National League side Exeter University recently.

We wish all our wounded soldiers a speedy recovery!

Hockey Reunion 2009

June 2009 was a busy time for OM hockey with two major events in the space of two weeks. Hockey was given centre stage at the annual OMS Reunion and this allowed for both Mens and Ladies matches on the Saturday afternoon, as well as a more informal tournament the following day. It was truly a celebration of Millfield Hockey, bringing together players from five decades, as well as many international and present national league players. Two weeks later two OM teams battled it out on the Campus Pitch in what has become a traditional OM Vanda Steer Memorial exhibition match on Parents Day.

On the international scene, Rufus McNaught-Barrington (1997-04; Edgarley & Etonhurst) and Alys Brooks (2005-07; Acacia) both secured their Senior caps for Wales this year. Richard Mantell (1992-99; Edgarley & Day), Simon Mantell (1994-02; Edgarley & Day) and Nick Brothers (1994-01; Edgarley & Shapwick) were members of the victorious England squad that won the European Hockey Championship in Amsterdam this summer; the first time that England has won a gold medal since 1920! Defeating the Netherlands in the semi-final, they went on to defeat old rivals Germany 5-3, with Richard Mantell scoring twice. Tom Woods (2004-08; Skinner) represented England U21 in the Junior World Cup in Malaysia.

Congratulations are also due to all our OM players who managed to secure promotion to the Premier National League for Exeter University (men) and Birmingham University and Reading HC (women). When Reading HC and Exeter University met in the second game of the league, it seemed like yet another OM reunion with Nick Page (capt) (1994-2005; Edgarley & Day), Rufus McNaught-Barrington, Matthew Woods (1994-2005; Edgarley & Day), Tom Woods appearing for Exeter University (Ian Haley being unavailable), and Tom Bertram (1988-95; Edgarley & Millfield), Nick Brothers, Richard and Simon Mantell appearing for Reading. Sarah Page (2003-08; Edgarley & Witt) and Alys Woods had helped Birmingham University to achieve Premier League hockey this season, as did Laura Puddle (1997-02; Edgarley & Portway) for Reading HC.
