Amsterdam Sevens - 16th/17th May
Academy Squad: Tom Dann (Capt), Adam Clayton, Alex Nielson, Tom Ross, John Brake, Daniel Venn, Dominic Jones, Hugo Boylan, Edward Gough and Dan Masters.
The Boys played extremely well in the early rounds and outclassed most of their opposition with some very entertaining sevens, winning 62-0, 24-0, 70-0 and 42-7 on the first day, and 35-7 and 26-7 in the semi-finals. In the quarter-finals they met Kooga Wailers, the Newcastle Falcons Academy team. These full-time professionals had too much strength and speed for us and despite the stout resistance we went down 31-5.
Veterans Squad: Richard Dix (Capt), Patrick Chenery, David Jones, Matt Harris, Tom Acland, Yorrick Legg, Charlie Openshaw, Geraint Evans, Richard Walters, Ben Pothecary, Simon Hill, Boris Pluskowski, John Macey, Dough O’Gorman and Adam Vander.
Only five of the squad were backs, quickly reduced to four when John Macey suffered a hamstring injury. Nevertheless the boys won their first two games comfortably, narrowly losing the third 12-10.
On the second day we had only three fit backs, winning the first game 12-7, but the Wooden Spoon Vets, all of whom still play regularly, were too good in the semi, winning 24-0. These two squads were a credit to the School, both on and off the field, and their approach has clearly made Millfield teams great favourites with the local crowds.
