OM Shows the Way for Gap Year Students!

It is the moment when many students, having decided to take a gap year before continuing their education, are considering exactly how to use it. Besides seeing the world or gaining work experience, an increasingly popular option, and one supported by UCAS and even by Prince Harry and William, seems to be learning a new and exciting skill.

OM, Tom Theakston (1995-2006; Edgarley & Holmcroft, and far left in the photo) did exactly that, and enrolled on a Ski le Gap course in Canada.

As a result, Tom is now a qualified Level 2 COA, Freestyle and Race Coach, which enables him to teach skiing and snowboarding all over the globe, although he found the 3 month experience of being away from home and meeting new people in a challenging environment far more rewarding than simply becoming an expert skier.

To learn more about Ski le Gap or to be a part of Ski le Gap 2011, OMs are invited to attend the annual event hosted by Ski le Gap at Royal Overseas League, London, on Sunday 12th September 2010. To accept this invitation, please contact Mike Dewar on 020 7993 3833 or Arti Tailor on 020 7993 3833.

About Ski le Gap

Ski le Gap was founded 15 years ago in Canada. The experience offered by Ski le Gap provides students with a change of environment, a break from the pressures of academic life, the chance to experience new cultures and meet different people. It offers the opportunity for students to ‘discover themselves’ by being challenged in new ways.

The Ski le Gap courses offer life skills that students would not be able to achieve anywhere else. The activities taught are both physically and intellectually challenging, the training is intense and set in unusually extreme climatic conditions.

The skills students acquire are transferable and long lasting. Learning to communicate enthusiasm and knowledge and to motivate and lead a group is as valuable at a job interview in a future teaching role or in the Boardroom as they are on the mountain.

Ski le Gap is based in French Canada so you get three cultures for the price of one - French, Canadian, and the wonderful bit where it all joins up and becomes French-Canadian! As the first language in Mont Tremblant is French there are French improvement classes for all students.
