The Wales Branch Launch
Report by Alun Ford (Former Tutor), Acting Chairman
The reconstituted Wales-Cymru Branch of the Old Millfieldian Society is up and running! Thanks to the efforts of Nina Anthony (Treasurer) and Richard Jones (Secretary), a convivial gathering of thirty or more OMs was held at the Park House Club, Cardiff, on October 17th 2009.
In the distinguished company of society chairman, Rod Speed and his wife, secretary John Davies, and the doyenne of Millfield Prep, Sarah Champion, OMs of vintages as distant as the fifties and the nineties regaled each other with tales of the past- and the fictions that emanated from them .Enjoying an attractive array of tapas and the occasional glass of wine, all present were determined that this time the Wales branch of the society would be a success- and were confident that friends in absentia on this occasion would be there next time.
Several of those present volunteered to join the committee, and already ideas for the next function have been broached: these include a race day at Chepstow and an eve-of -international get-together in Cardiff. All Wales-based OMs are warmly invited to future events ......Cymru Am Byth!!
'Meet the Headmaster' event in Cardiff
The Park House Club, right in the heart of Cardiff, proved a superb venue for the "Meet the Headmaster" get-together on Friday 8th May, when 65 or so OMs and parents, former, current and prospective, enjoyed drinks and canapés in an extremely relaxed setting.
Craig Considine was introduced by John Davies who wondered whether, after 9 months at Millfield, the Australian Headmaster was beginning to display the first signs of a Somerset accent. It proved not to be too obvious as Craig enjoyed meeting most of those present after speaking for a short while on his early impressions of and future plans for Millfield. Clearly, the School is in very good hands.
On the evening, several OMs (and former Tutors, Alun Ford and Rob Eagle) came forward, interested in being part of a new OMS South Wales Branch Committee. For the next event, it is unlikely that the Headmaster will bother to take his passport again.
